Educator Spotlight: Tyler Fenix

This month’s Spotlight is on Tyler Fenix, one of Simply Organic Beauty’s long-time trusted educators. Being in the hair industry for more than 30 years, he has witnessed and experienced the various health-damaging effects of constant exposure to toxic chemicals on his well-being and his clients. This prompted him to look for healthier alternatives and set up his own salon suite in North Miami Beach, Florida.

Read Tyler’s interview below.

What gives you motivation in the industry?

I have always been motivated by healthy hair. Since I began at the age of 16 as an apprentice in Baltimore, I was guided by some great individuals who taught “If you can give them what they want, while also keeping their hair at its healthiest, you will have clients for life,” and “You break the bonds when you break the hair!”

What motivates you to help inspire your clients?

I would have to say that Oway, the company, and the products themselves has been my most recent motivator when it comes to inspiring clients. There is an ease that the apothecary-like retail and color system lends to helping clients want to take better care of their hair and the environment.

Do you specialize in anything? If so, what and why?

Since about the late 80’s and early 90’s I focused solely on specializing in hair coloring. I love it. In many ways the application process is meditative for me. I find satisfaction in the weaving of a traditional foil application and I get my creative juices flowing with techniques like Balayage and Hair Painting. I also focused on Hair Cutting throughout the years and hope to infuse some new energy in that area soon to add to my list of educator’s skills.

Do you have a favorite formula you can share?

Hmmm, this is a hard one. I love all formulas from simple natural grey coverage to complex dimensional applications. I would say more about a technique here which can be used with many formulas.

I apply a color to my clients hair like 15g 6.34 + 7.34 + 20vol.

After application root to end, I will paint a mixture of 15g 0.0 + 5g 0.3 booster + 30vol around the face and artfully crown over the applied base. This gives a very natural, subtle highlight that is easy to repeat in a few visits. It is excellent for shorter hair, as foils or plastic is not necessary. Just between us holistic colorists – it is a great ticket up-sale to put a few more bucks on your book without taking a lot of time and is also great for those who are afraid of bleaching.

What practices do you have as a holistic stylist?

I choose to work one on one with my clients. This gives them a sense of being really cared for. I have a salon suite, which is great for this because they feel like they have my undivided attention. Most of the fear they have is related to previous salons where they were left to “process” well over time and made them feel like they were unimportant.

oway-aroma-potI have purchased a sink which allows them to lay almost fully back, while also allowing me to sit while I am shampooing, which saves my back while giving my legs a rest. I also have always given a massage therapy shampoo! This gives my clients the ultimate feeling of peace and relaxation that is very hard to find on a consistent basis anywhere else.

During the processing time, I offer herbal and green teas with raw organic honey or liquid pure stevia. I try to steer them toward decaf options and do not serve coffee, as even the aroma is too stimulating.

I use floor cleaners I make with essential oils and an atomizer that diffuses a soft aroma upon the client’s arrival and during shampoo. I use ONLY ammonia/formaldehyde free color and chemicals. My clients notice this usually by the middle of the visit when they are not having problems with breathing or their eyes tearing!

What are some good tips for new stylists trying to break into the industry?

Always go back to basics. The laws of color will never disappoint you, but will assist you by helping you formulate and/or add techniques to your practice which will assist you in achieving artistic but consistent results that can be repeated with each visit.

When you shop at Ikea, then bring it home to put together, you will do much better if you read the manufacturer’s directions. No matter what color line you choose, it is always worth it to read that company’s guidelines over and over until you understand and have it committed to memory. There is no shame in keeping the manual next to your color stations and referring to it until you feel comfortable with that brand’s mixing ratio for grey coverage or formulations for refreshing the ends. This practice will save you many hours of having to correct things. It also strengthens your knowledge of the line so you can break out and create with confidence later!

Consistency is key to repeat business. Fashion techniques and colors are a blast! If you are in editorial hair color work, then have at it with artistic fervor. But if you are looking to build a salary by way of repeat, returning clients, do yourself a favor and be consistent in your applications, formulations, and recording WHAT WORKED and WHAT DID NOT.

What is your most significant accomplishment as a professional?

I would say Eco Hair Color Style has been a great accomplishment for me. It is a small salon suite, but it is also my start-up. I have a larger goal over a period of foreseeable years, but I feel like this small start has taught me so much, in bite sized bits (mostly). It has been fun and fulfilling creating my holistic, organic color business. I celebrated 2 years since opening in March. But I have to add that becoming an Educator for Simply Organic Beauty and sticking with that over these last 5 or so years has really kept me inspired to achieve my own personal goals!

oway-hsystemWhat is one product that you feel every salon must have and why?

My answer is not just one product but the whole Oway Hsystem. This has truly made my work stronger and enhances every aspect of Holistic Hair color practice. Hmilk is paramount for delivering a stellar canvas for toning after Hbleach and, in my opinion, replaces Olaplex 10 times over! Hscreen has been a skin staining savior and Hrestore has helped me prepare and repair while I color refresh ends. Hscreen saves me time and allows me to use that time during the shampoo to relax and restore my clients’ minds.

Outside of work, what are your main goals in life?

For most of my adult life I have studied/practiced many different and varying forms of spiritual/energetic modalities of meditation, healing, and self enhancement. I think I am being called to refresh those and maybe even teach locally in small groups to carry the message and share the teaching. This also mirrors my Educating in Holistic Hair Color as giving back is part of learning. After so many years in the business, it is like a rite of passage!

How do you handle a challenging client?

This relates to the previous question. I have to be real here because that is what makes me shine! I am not ever going to try to tell anyone that I have mastered this area of my field because days change and people coming in are very, very different. This is truly a challenge for any of us at times in our career, as we are in a very emotional business of beauty, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Refreshing my spiritual, energetic, healing and meditative practices will enhance and strengthen my ability to handle challenging clients.

I am only as ready as my spiritual and mental condition allows. In my humble opinion, this is part of a core holistic practice of any kind because the peace we want to impart must first be generated within ourselves and then maintained by our own personalized feedback system and daily practice.

Clients can push our buttons without a doubt! I wonder sometimes if it is like a part-time job for some. I feel at times like I am being tested, and perhaps I am. Sometimes I score high, other times not so much. But it reminds me I am a human being and I have found over the years that clients must be made aware of this fact too. Not in a harsh way, but instead in ways where we as holistically minded hair professionals create spaces where we can care for, listen to, and uphold one another in the way we would like to do for our clients. I don’t mean screaming in the back room or talking behind the back of the client in the salon. I mean in forums for holistic hair peeps where we can let it go and find solutions or know we are not alone.

So in my stronger moments, when I am centered and balanced, I try to change the direction with humor. I take a quick break from the moment by grabbing another towel, breaking eye contact, excusing myself, and then starting from zero. I have been known to actually say, “let’s start over” when I sense some tension. I work harder to listen. I work harder to explain options. I work harder to get it right!

But here is what I do as well, and I think this comes from years in the field and some of my personal practices: I have created my boundaries and put them in writing on my website and I refer to them in certain times when I feel the client is a boundary buster. Things like: By appointment only; charging for consultation and applying that to appointments within 7 days only; and not allowing clients to blow out their own hair.

I say what I mean and mean what I say, but I don’t say it mean. I say no when no is needed. But I offer an alternative when possible. I stay true to myself and my practices as it pertains to healthy, holistic hair.

Ultimately, if it seems we are just not connecting, I bow out and release them with love by suggesting I may not be the best for them. But this is rare and I have only had to do it a few times as a last resort.

Lastly, I go above and beyond to deliver the best work I can deliver, regardless of the challenging client or events that transpired. Before mixing, I find a place where I can ground and center myself and my mind before I formulate or mix. Many times, this wins them over when nothing else would!

With that said, I am still human. In light of our Holistic Hair Practice discussion here, I must remember I am an emotional, spiritual, and physical being. I am affected by variables and must ultimately be forgiving towards myself and others in trying times. This is my learning curve where instead of speeding up the car, I slow down or stop to gain a better perspective so the road ahead is safe and enjoyable for all.

FENNEL SEED OIL BENEFITS: The Beauty Hack to Healthy Hair

$

For many families, Fennel or Foeniculum vulgare is a favorite kitchen staple for the crunchy, sweet flavor it brings to any meal. Apart from the that, none of its parts go to waste: The pale green bulb can be added into a soup or salad; the leaves can enhance the flavor of pasta; while the seeds can be used as spice and made into oil.

From free-radical fighting antioxidants to phytonutrients, Fennel Seeds are loaded with over 80 vitamins and minerals that you wouldn’t get from your average vegetable. This makes it an excellent remedy for many hair and scalp conditions.

Benefits of Fennel Seed Oil to the Hair

Strengthens Hair

oway-nurturing-dropsOur bodies have a way of telling us if there’s something not right inside. For instance, when our hormones are not balanced or when we lack certain nutrients, our skin and hair will let us know instantly. Weak, damaged hair and fall outs are a sign of nutrient deficiency. It means our body is lacking in vitamins and minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron, among others.

Fennel seeds are rich in vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and iron, which is why many are using its extract for preventing hair loss. It helps to strengthen the follicles by bringing nutrition to the scalp. We highly recommend Oway Nurturing Drops to reverse and heal damage from the inside out.

Stimulates Hair Growth

Free radicals are detrimental to the hair. Without enough antioxidants in the body, free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which impedes hair growth and causes thinning. Fennel seeds are packed with antioxidants, as well as nutrients like pantothenic acid, iron, molybdenum, copper, folate, iron, and niacin that stimulate hair growth.

Fights Oxidative Stress

Almost 15% of Fennel’s nutritional value is made up of vitamin C, making it a very potent antioxidant. Vitamin C is also a known electron donor, which help prevent oxidative damage caused by imbalance of free radical levels in our body.

Oxidative stress can manifest in a variety of ways, from breakage to hair loss as a result of rapid aging. The only way to counter this is to use products containing vitamin C, like Oway After-Sun Hair Mask. The Fennel extract in this hair mask will help strip the hair and scalp of free radicals after a day in the sun.

Moisturizes the Hair

Many consumers make the mistake of overloading the hair with protein to keep it looking shiny and healthy. But nothing could be further than the truth. Our hair strands have no natural lubrication, so they rely on the oil produced in the roots to keep them looking shiny and nourished. An overabundance of protein can throw off the natural pH balance of the hair and scalp, resulting in hygral fatigue and dry scalp. The antioxidants and antimicrobial properties of Fennel tones the hair and scalp, stripping them of elements that are causing dryness, including protein buildup.

Cleanses the Scalp

According to research, Fennel Seed Oil effectively inhibits the growth of a wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi.1 Due to its acetone, n-butanol, ethanol and ether content, fennel extract is great for treating conditions like dandruff and eczema, and calming irritated scalp. Those with sensitive skin would benefit from using Oway Soothing Remedy Spot Treatment for its healing and moisturizing properties.

fennel-oil-hair-benefits

oway-soothing-remedyWho would have thought this favorite soup and salad ingredient offers all these amazing hair and scalp benefits? However, do take note that like all essential oils, Fennel Seed Oil must be diluted before application to avoid photosensitivity. Be sure to mix with a carrier oil or water before using.

Tech Tip: How to Use Oway Hplus Boosters/Correctors

$
0
0

How many of us have that client who constantly complains that they see remnants of red in their hair color no matter what you do or how you formulate?

This scenario is a common problem we face of as stylists.  The client might say they see red tones, when in fact, to the stylist, it might truly be a golden, warm hue that darker levels naturally expose.  So how do we rectify this issue and ensure your client loves their color every time? First, we must know the reason WHY the hair exhibits these warm tones.

IDENTIFY: PIGMENTS, LEVELS & HAIR COLORS

Warm tones are a natural occurrence in hair and can be further enhanced by sun exposure. Natural melanin in the hair is made of 3 primary colors (blue, red, and yellow) in the form of  eumelanin (responsible for brown and black hair color) and pheomelanin (responsible for red tones).

When hair is lightened in any way, the warmer tones – red and yellow – are always exposed.  Blue pigment is the first to leave the hair, and at certain levels never existed at all.

During the coloring process, melanin in the hair begins to split, becoming smaller in molecular size and water soluble. The dye intermediates in the color begin to oxidize, becoming larger and less water soluble, thus exposing warmth.

You know WHY warmth occurs, now you’ll learn HOW to either mute or enhance these remaining tones with Oway’s Tone Boosters/Correctors, also known as, Hplus. These Booster/Correctors are a helpful tool to keep on hand in your salon. The cooler tones will help you tone out the warmth very easily.  The 0.8 Blue will help mute orange tones; the 0.1 Ash will increase additional tonality where extra ash is needed; the 0.9 Green will help refine red tones; while the 0.7 Violet will eliminate unwanted yellow. All are a MUST in every color room when customizing color formulas.

CORRECT

By considering the underlying pigment, you will have a better idea when choosing which Hplus corrector to use.

Red/Orange Pigment

The underlying pigment of a level 6 is red/orange, and we know to refine this warmth, we must choose something cooler to refine. When a level 6 neutral color with a 20-volume catalyst is chosen, some warmth might occur because of the natural reflects of a level 6.  Refining this problem is as easy as adding one of the Booster/Correctors into your level 6.0 to assist in refining the red/orange. In this scenario choosing the 0.9 or the 0.8 will remedy the warmth, making a cooler neutral result.

Oway-Boosters

When lifting a 4 to a level 5, we are exposing the natural red in the hair. To refine the warmth of a 4.0 for an absolute cooler neutral with an underlying pigment of red, we can choose the 0.9 tone to bring us to a stunning rich coffee brown.

Yellow/Gold Pigment

Violet Booster/Corrector is an absolute necessity to keep on hand too. One of the biggest culprits when lifting with bleach or a high-lift blonde series is yellow or a strong gold. Adding the violet tone Booster/Corrector in small increments can help refine the most stubborn gold and help create a creamy beige blonde.

High-Lift Series

Sometimes, a small increase of ash is just enough to refine and add extra tonality to the 90 series. 0.0=90.11 and 1g per 10g of color of the 0.1 are exactly what is needed to create stunning blondes or beautiful silvery gray tones. We recommend 1 gram of Booster/Corrector to 10 grams of color. You will have to be the judge if adding more is necessary. However, keep in mind the intensity of the booster correctors.

hair-levels-and-undertones-chart

Hair Levels and Undertones Chart

INTENSIFY

Hplus Booster/Correctors are multi-purposeful too. They act as a double agent and can be used for so much more than just correcting. How many times do we see someone with a streak of purple, blue, or green? These bright, bold colors are not just for the young at heart; this trend doesn’t have an age limit. They can be stunning in a range of clients looking for a trendy fashion shade.

Hplus can be used to create an endless palette of color. These fun fashion colors can add some spice to any hair color. The shades can also be intermixed to create lighter, more pastel colors like teal, lavender, corals or if the client simply wants that deep rich purple/violet.

MAINTAIN

oway-color-protection-veilWhen creating fun fashion colors, keep in mind that the pigments in these colors are larger, preformed dye molecules and will need to be formulated with comparable Hcolor colors for longer last ability. Educating our clients how to properly take care of these fashion shades will also increase the longevity of the color. Recommending sulfate-free shampoos, avoiding excess washing in hot water, protecting the hair while in the sun with a product like the Color Protection Veil will all prolong the vibrancy of the color.

Clients that usually desire these fun fashion colors might want a completely different color the next month. Changing things up for the next month can be as simple as taking 0.0 and 20 volume catalyst to gently remove these pigments from the hair.

The creative possibilities are limitless! Does your color room have these valuable tools?

Your “Formaldehyde-Free” Keratin Treatment May Not Be What It Seems

$

0

On December 14, 2016, the Environmental Working Group and Women’s Voices for the Earth sued the United States Food and Drug Administration for failing to protect consumers from the dangers of hair straightening treatments.1 The lawsuit alleges the FDA has failed to act against the prevalence of formaldehyde, which is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in keratin treatments in salons.

Why is formaldehyde dangerous?

methylene-glycol-formaldehyde-salonsFormaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas used in keratin treatments to blast open the hair cuticle, accelerating keratin protein bonding to the hair. However, the health effects of using formaldehyde are far too harsh on the client and the stylist. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, exposure to this toxic chemical can cause health issues2, such as:

  • Respiratory Problems, including Breathing Problems and Coughing
  • Irritations, including Sore Throat, Scratchy Eyes, and Nosebleeds
  • Cancer (Nose, Throat)

Unfortunately, the FDA has no control over cosmetics, except when companies violate the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. While the FDA has already issued warning letters to GIB, LLC dba Brazilian Blowout and to Van Tibolli Beauty Corp. for safety and labeling violations, the FDA admits to having no authority to stop cosmetics with harmful chemicals (except when they contain additives) from entering the market, UNLESS they get caught for “misbranding”.3 All the government can do is send out hazard alerts and updates to warn consumers, prompting independent organizations to create voluntary standards for safe cosmetics.

After industry-funded panels and organizations revealed the health risks of formaldehyde a few years ago, many brands have begun removing formaldehyde from their ingredients lists and marketing their products as “Formaldehyde-Free”, only to replace it with a seemingly “safer” chemical – Methylene Glycol.

What is methylene glycol?

Methylene Glycol is a mixture of formaldehyde and water, and releases formaldehyde when heated with a straightening iron or blow dryer. Although methylene glycol and formaldehyde are different chemically, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in Europe considers them equal. 4

Concentrations of Methylene Glycol in hair straightening products can reach up to 9.6%,5 which is much higher than the limit set for formaldehyde in the US, which is 0.1%. So while companies can technically brand their products as formaldehyde-free, the health risks are still pretty much the same.

How can we avoid formaldehyde and methylene glycol exposure?

1. Read the label. Avoid treatments that contain formaldehyde, methylene glycol, and other similar names such as formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanal, oxomethane, oxymethylene, or CAS Number 50-00-0 in the ingredients. 6

formaldehyde-keratin-hair-treatments

2. Request for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires manufacturers to list formaldehyde in the ingredients if it is in the product for 0.1% or more or if the product releases formaldehyde above 0.1 parts of formaldehyde per million parts (ppm) of air.7

3. Improve the indoor air quality of your salon. There are several plants you can install to rid your salon of fumes and eliminate pollutants. Plants like Peace Lily, Aloe Vera, English Ivy, Azaleas, and Weeping Figs don’t just make beautiful decors, but they also help remove traces of formaldehyde, ammonia, and other toxic chemicals in the air.Formaldehyde-Free-Hair-Smoothing-Treatment

4. Ensure proper handling and disposal of salon products. Doing so will not only protect you and your clients from exposure, but you are also helping prevent environmental hazards from improper disposal of toxic waste.

5. Use keratin treatments that do not use formaldehyde and methylene glycol. Smooth Rituals Keratin Treatment uses Hydrolyzed Collagen, L-Cysteine, and a blend of Amino Acids, Keratin Complex, and Jojoba Oil in place of formaldehyde and methylene glycol to smoothe the cuticle and keep the hair frizz-free for 3-4 months. This non-toxic formula ensures that the health of the hair, the stylist, and the client is never compromised.

Oway Phytoprotein Mist: The Healthy Vegan Treatment for Summer-Starved Hair

$

Without the right protection, the harsh summer heat can be very unforgiving on the hair. And if your client already has dry hair, excessive sun exposure and heat can cause even more damage if not treated in time.

Organic Way offers solutions to hydration and strength issues in their treatment options, and one favorite is the Phytoprotein Mist. The Phytoprotein Mist is part of the Frequent Use line and is formulated to be gentle and effective for everyday use.

Benefits of Oway Phytoprotein Mist

  1. The pH of the Phytoprotein Mist lies between 5.5 and 6.5 and therefore, a great way to restore the hair’s pH balance after it has been through stresses such as mechanical, external, or chemical damage. A combination of organic chestnut, soy, and wheat proteins form a barrier against external aggressors while increasing moisture content and renewing shine.
  2. It instantly detangles knotted hair and protects the hair from forming split ends. The soy and wheat proteins offer added protection, easier comb-ability, and hydration.
  3. This miracle mist is not only a hair damage solution, but it can also be used regularly to maintain healthy hair. When hair feels dry, dull or limp, simply use the mist to give the hair the nutrients and energy it needs. The organic chestnut proteins in the mist provide the strength, vitality, and shine the hair needs. These nutrients are harnessed from the biodynamic organic ingredients in the formula – a no-rinse formula which allows the active ingredients to penetrate the hair and scalp effectively.
  4. Phytoprotein spray is also effective in assisting in hair color services. It locks the color molecules into the hair once the hair has professionally been colored. Color molecules bind with proteins, making the hair color richer and longer lasting.
  5. This is a must-have for any professional stylist as it functions as both a unique treatment and a styling aid at the same time. It performs like a two-in-one protein mist: treat and style!

How to Use Oway Phytoprotein Mist

Spray into dry or damp hair daily to give nutrition to thin, dry, and damaged locks. Do not rinse. It detangles, while also helping to coat the hair fiber to protect from split ends. Phytoprotein Mist is your daily energizing and revitalizing solution for limp and lifeless hair without weighing the hair down.

Phytoprotein Mist vs. Hrestore

uses-of-oway-phytoprotein-mist

Like Phytoprotein Mist, Hrestore aids in repairing and restoring damaged hair to health with the use of multiple plant proteins. But unlike Phytoprotein Mist, Hrestore is a professional-only backbar protein treatment that’s strictly used by stylists during chemical services.

oway-hrestoreWith a pH between 4 and 5, this spray is the perfect spray after lightening or color services to bring protein and structure back to the hair strands. It acts as a porosity-balancing agent, locking protein into the places it is missing and allowing the color to take more deeply and evenly.

To use, spray evenly over wet or dry hair, focusing more on mid-lengths and ends. Do not rinse, style as desired. It is not recommended to use more than five times in 72 hours.

Naturally Occurring Proteins That are Great for the Hair

While it’s normal to shed hair daily, you will notice extra strands clogging your shower drain during this time of the year. Hair loss is typically attributed to iron deficiency, but it can also be brought about by lack of protein in the hair.

Protein is the building block of hair. Without it, hair can become weak and brittle, leading to hair loss.

The Wet Stretch Test

So how do we determine if our hair suffers from protein deficiency? The Wet Stretch Test will help you find the answer:

  1. Separate about 10 strands of hair and spray with water.
  2. Hold the strands tight with both hands and gently pull the hair.
  3. Hair that stretches in returns to its normal length is a sign of healthy hair. But if it doesn’t return to its normal length and breaks is a clear indication of hair lacking protein.

The good news is – protein naturally occurs in food and plants, and is available to consumers mostly in hydrolyzed form.

Hydrolyzed means it’s broken down into smaller units. Some proteins (such as the ones below) can be extremely large and needs to be broken down so the hair can absorb them better. Check out the 5 common naturally occurring proteins that you can incorporate in your client’s treatment.

Natural Sources of Protein

Hydrolized Wheat Protein

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein is a water-soluble protein derived from wheat that’s highly sought-after for its strengthening and moisturizing benefits. It helps reduce the hair’s porosity and increase its ability to retain moisture, resulting in smooth, shiny locks.

Present in: Oway Phytoprotein Mist

Hydrolyzed Silk Protein

Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world, making it a popular source of protein. The hydrolyzed components of silk protein help improve the hair’s elasticity and increase its resiliency by forming a crystalline barrier on the strands. Silk is also credited for its ability to hold 10,000 its weight in water, thus increasing the hair’s ability to retain moisture.

Present in: Oway Hbleach Butter Cream Lightener

Hydrolized Soy Protein

Like Wheat Protein, hydrolyzed soy protein is water soluble. Due to its moisturizing and protective properties, this vegetable-sourced protein increases each strand’s ability to bind moisture, adding shine and manageability to the hair. It also contains cysteine, a proteinogenic amino acid that penetrates the hair shaft and help improve its tensile strength.

Present in: Oway Rebuilding Serum

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein

This type of protein works like other popular animal-based proteins, only better. Due to its humectant qualities, it absorbs into the hair faster and more easily without leaving any build up.

Present in: Oway Color Protection Hair Bath

natural-sources-of-protein

Keratin Protein

Formaldehyde-Free-Hair-Smoothing-TreatmentKeratin naturally occurs in the human body. It is the essential protein that make up our hair, skin, and nails. And while Keratin cannot be found in plants, we can always eat food that will help boost keratin production in our body. These are foods rich in proteins, biotin, and vitamin A. However, hair products containing Keratin Complex source this protein from animal hair.

Present in: Smooth Rituals Keratin Smooth Treatment (Keratin Complex sourced ethically, cruelty-free)

While these types of protein are readily available everywhere, using protein should be done in moderation. When used improperly and excessively, it can lead to over-proteinized hair – which also leads to hair loss and breakage. This is why we recommend seeking a hair professional’s opinion before sticking with a regimen.

Hydrolates: Healing Water Distillates That Invigorate the Mind, Body, & Hair

$

Many people think Essential Oils are only used for aromatherapy, when in fact it’s just part of the big picture. For thousands of years, people have turned to essential oils for several medicinal and health purposes. Even the essential oil hydrolates, popularly known as hydrosols, were also used for the same purposes, dating as far back as 7000 years.

What are Hydrolates?

oway-bio-rich-waterHydrolates are by-products of the essential oil making process. When botanical plants are steam distilled, they release microscopic vapor droplets which are then collected and made into invigorating sprays like Oway’s Bio-Rich Water and Flowerfall.

Depending on the essential oil used during the distillation process, below are some of the many benefits of using Hydrolates in your salon.

Eliminates Toxins in the Air

Many people have a mistaken belief that commercial room sprays are more effective than natural-based ones. But nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, chemical-laden air fresheners can even cause more harm than good, such as allergies and respiratory issues.

Unlike commercial room sprays, hydrolates neutralize then eliminate odors instead of simply masking them with another chemical – not to mention hydrolates do not contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that cause adverse health effects. Instead, hydrolates offer aromatherapeutic benefits from essential oils.

Cleanses the Hair and Skin

Everyday pollutants are easily absorbed by our hair and skin. Constant exposure to these harmful elements immediately take a toll on our body’s normal functions. Hence, we experience hair loss, aging, among others. A spray of hydrolates with citrus essence provides astringent and cleansing effects, thoroughly clearing the hair and skin of any pollutants.

Fights Bacteria

Hydrolates from plants like citrus fruits and geranium have natural antiseptic and disinfectant properties, which help fight off bacteria. Furthermore, they’re known for their ability to treat skin irritations and inhibit bacteria growth, which speeds up healing.

Gives a Mood-Elevating Aroma

Various studies have already proven the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. From relieving stress to reducing anxiety levels1, essential oils have helped with various nervous and emotional disorders. Since hydrolates contain all the healing components of essential oils, this miracle water is great for when you need to soothe and calm the nerves.

To create a relaxing ambiance in your salon, a few spritz of hydrolates containing Lavender, Bergamot, and Rose Essence is what you need.

Benefits-of-Hydrolates

Hydrates Skin and Hair

oway-flowerfallSeveral botanical oils offer amazing moisturizing benefits to the hair and skin. These benefits are infused in hydrolates during the distillation process; therefore, spraying these active waters can help improve the hair’s combability and the skin’s moisture levels. They can even be used in place of leave-in conditioners and lotions.

It is important to note that certain precautions must be observed when using hydrolates. Like some essential oils, these aromatic waters may also cause irritation. Although they are considered generally safe for topical use, we highly recommend doing a patch test before using them.

Salon Website 101: Elements of a Successful Salon Website

$

In the age of Google and social media, having a website is crucial for your business. It enables potential customers to find and learn about your salon. But it doesn’t just end in having a website. To take advantage of the incredible benefits of having an online presence, your website should have all the necessary features that will make them feel confident about doing business with you.

Think of a website as an extension of your salon. It should have all the important information about you, your team, and your company. This allows potential customers to know you and trust you with their hair.

We rounded up 4 essential elements of a salon website to help you develop and gain new customers.

Elements of a Successful Salon Website

CONTACT

First and foremost, the main goal of having a website is to provide a convenient way for potential clients to get in touch with you. But if your website does not highlight your contact information, you will most likely lose their business.

  • Putting your Contact Information on BOTH your Home and Contact Page is essential. There are clients who don’t like navigating menus, so having your information in a prominent place on the home page allows them to easily find it and reach you.
  • Contact Forms do not cut it anymore. Clients today prefer immediate information. Whether it is a phone call, text message, social media, or email, your website should display multiple points of contact. This also includes your complete mailing address.
  • Use a Call to Action (CTA). CTAs entice a visitor take an action that’s beneficial to your business. Phrases as simple as “Call Us” or “Book an Appointment” can help convert a regular web browser into a paying client.
  • The Internet is here to stay, so whether you like it or not – we must move with the times. Having an Online Booking System allows your salon to receive reservations 24/7 and immediately notify your clients of your availability in seconds. It minimizes your workload and, at the same time, keeps your clients happy. It’s a WIN-WIN!

CULTURE

Your salon culture is critical to your success. It shapes and influences your clients’ attitudes and behaviors toward your business. Many clients go to salons to relax and feel comfortable and welcome. If your website showcases that, earning their business is going to be easy.

Having the following on your website will help:

  • Your Salon Logo & Colors. Believe it or not – keeping your website’s colors and logos consistent with your brand plays a major role in decision-making.

Neuroscientiest Bevil Conway believes that humans are hardwired for certain hues.1

Greens, for example, can have a balancing and harmonizing effect, which is perfect for a Holistic Salon website.

  • Unique and Professional Salon Photos. As much as you can, avoid using generic stock photos. Clients have unique needs, and by using stock photos, your salon will look pretty much the same as the next salon. Investing in professional pictures will help set your business apart from all the others on your street.
  • Your Salon’s Story, Team, and Values. This will help determine if you’re a good fit for them. As Holistic Hair Stylists, we cater to clients who are trying to maintain a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. Highlighting that on your website by sharing your team’s story and values will help attract more clients who are looking to do the same.

COSTS

Admit it – walking into a salon and asking for the cost of a service can be very intimidating, especially for new clients. Disclosing your services and pricing helps alleviate their worry, and thus are more likely to set up an appointment now that they know they can afford your services.

However, be sure to include proper disclosure regarding your salon policies and procedures to avoid any misunderstanding.

Salon-Website-Tips

For instance, include in the fine print that prices posted on your website are base prices, and total cost of service will vary depending on the treatments needed as well as the length of hair. We don’t want to lose their business over a simple mix-up.

CONTENT

Never underestimate the power of an up-to-date website. This can be in the form of a Blog, Testimonials, Portfolio, and Service/Product pages.

salon-testimonials
  • Even though you offer outstanding services, prospective clients want to hear an unbiased opinion. They want reviews from real people to validate your claim, and this is where Testimonials/Reviews page come in. Like personal recommendations, people nowadays turn to online reviews before making a purchase. 2 Testimonials provide a human element to your business, bridging the gap between you and your potential clients.
  • Having a Blog can help you drive more traffic to your website, increasing your website’s SEO performance. This puts you at the top of the search results on Google as well as positions your salon as the expert in your field. A monthly or quarterly blog post is recommended.
  • As Holistic Hair Stylists, our work is our business card. Before-and-Afters are an excellent way to showcase your skills and your ability to improve your client’s hair.
  • For customers, nothing can be more annoying than finding out that their favorite product is sold out. Or when a service had a price increase. This can lead to negative reviews and can cost you to lose their business, so be sure to keep your Product and Service pages updated.

5 Money-Making Features Your Salon Website Must Have

$
0
0

With many businesses and consumers relying on digital technology, having a well-oiled website is a necessity. But the cost of maintaining a website can be too much for some, not to mention navigating the waters of marketing a salon business online can be very intimidating especially for DIYers.

At Simply Organic Beauty, we strive to help our clients grow their business, so we’re letting you in on our trade secrets! Below are the top 5 money-making strategies you can use to bring in more clients to your salon with minimal marketing effort and expenses.

Must-Have Money-Making Website Features

Newsletter Opt-In

Some people cringe at the thought of creating an email newsletter for their business, but the truth is, it remains as one of the most cost-effective and powerful profit-making machines. In fact, in a 2017 study by B2B Content Marketing Benchmarks, Budgets and Trends, email marketing is still the most successful marketing strategy ahead of social media.1

Top-Salon-Websites

And it doesn’t come as a surprise. Newsletters help you grow your client list at a fraction of a cost and time. Clients and prospective clients sign up for this service voluntarily. This means they are truly interested in what your salon has to offer, helping you to easily identify who your target clients are and update them on sales and events in a single swoop.

PRO TIP: Our favorite email marketing services for your salon website are MailChimp and Constant Contact. They’re free to start and simple to use. They also offer nice templates if you’re worried about designing your own.

Online Booking

Gone are the days when clients have to personally visit and wait for businesses to open before they can book an appointment. Now clients can do that from the comfort of their own home at any time. By having an Online Booking system in place, you can receive reservations 24/7.

User-friendly Online Booking apps like Vagaro, Square, and Schedulicity allow you to embed their widget on your salon website so clients can view your calendar and book an appointment without having to go to another website. They’re convenient, take the workload off your shoulders, and make for great customer service.

Unlike phone and in-person reservations, Online Booking systems also allow clients to check out what other customers have to say about your salon’s services and products. Which brings us to our next money-making feature.

Testimonials

Here’s a fact: 92% percent of consumers read online reviews and 84% of this number trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.

Yankelovich, a market research firm, found that 75% of people have negative perceptions about advertising2, meaning they are savvy enough to know when a brand is being dishonest. Hence, they turn to online testimonials to validate claims.

By adding a Testimonials page to your salon website, you are “humanizing” your business and providing prospective customers a glimpse into your salon, which helps convince them to book your services. You can either activate Testimonials on your website or embed reviews from sites like Yelp, Google+, and even Facebook. This way, you get to keep clients on your site and increase your conversions.

Portfolio

Portfolios aren’t just for writers, photographers, and graphic artists anymore. In the age of social media, you’re more likely to encounter a potential client asking about a hair color they saw online. Take advantage of this by including a gallery of your work on your website.

Salon-Website-Design

There are hundreds of website plug-ins that allow you to embed pictures (even your Instagram page) on your website. This way you can show your skills and increase your online visibility at the same time.

Gift Cards

e-gift-cardsGift Cards are powerful sales and relationship-building strategy every business should adopt. Unlike discount coupons, pre-paid gift cards have greater perceived value. They provide instant revenue and motivate clients to purchase your products and services immediately. In fact, 2 out of 3 consumers tend to spend more than 40% of the card’s value, and would almost always do repeat business.

Electronic Gift Card tools like Giftly and Yiftee allow your clients to buy gift cards through your site and send it to people they love. It’s one the most underestimated salon website design features!

5 Untold Secrets of Social Media Marketing For Salons

Years ago, social media marketing was totally unheard of. Facebook and Instagram started off as fun, alternative way to share photos and experiences. But as they gained more popularity, people quickly realized the untapped opportunities available online.

And it’s true. Social media is probably one of the greatest gifts to entrepreneurs. It’s free and you can reach hundreds (even thousands) of potential salon clients with a click of a button – if you know what to do. Luckily, we’ve taken the mystery out of social media marketing for hair salons with our latest salon business training!

Firstly, Facebook has the largest social network in the world, with over 2 billion users. Meanwhile, Instagram has reached over 700 million users this year. Among the many social media platforms available, these two provide the most efficient way to reach and engage current clients and potential customers.

Below are some useful tips on how you can leverage your salon’s social media pages to attract people to your business.

How to Effectively Use Social Media for Your Salon Business

1. Complete Your Profile

To many online users, your social media page is their first point of contact with your business – so be sure all the important information are there. Once you’ve created your Facebook and Instagram page, check to see if you have these on your profile pages:

a. Name, Address, Phone (NAP)

Having these three on your profile helps potential clients know more about your business. Aside from that, Google crawls these pieces of information to verify your business website, so make sure your social media NAP is consistent with your website and Google My Business page.

b. Photos

Photos provide a face to your business, so it’s important that you’re making a positive impression. Upload a professional photo of your salon and a cover picture to add more personality to your page.

c. About

The About section is the soul of your social media page. It’s often the first thing visitors check to see if your salon is worth their business.

d. Website URL

Don’t forget to add your salon website! Doing so helps boost your site’s ranking and verifies your business on Google. Take advantage of the gray verification badge offered by Facebook for businesses as well. This legitimizes your business and helps users discover your page easily in search results.

2. Know Your Target

As small business owners, knowing who your target audience is important as it will set the tone and overall personality of your social media page.

Consider the age bracket of your target audience when posting. Are they 18 – 29-year-olds? Posting fun, colorful hair colors is a great way to attract younger people. Tag those who you want to check out your post, and use relevant hashtags.

salon-social-media-marketing

Or are they 30-49-year-olds trying to maintain a holistic lifestyle? Sharing articles that are helpful to them will keep them coming back to your page – which brings us to our next tip.

3. Provide Valuable Content

To attract potential clients, you need to give them a reason to keep following you. Does your page offer any value or benefit to them? You can do this by creating useful content, such as:

a. Inspirational Quotes

Everyone likes to see and hear motivational words before starting their day. Posting inspirational quotes will help increase your salon page engagement.

b. Ingredient Information

As holistic hair stylists, your prospective clients will be looking for a salon that offers products with safe and healthy ingredients. Sharing useful information about the ingredients used in each of the products you use and highlighting their benefits will help generate interest in your business.

c. Promotions/Discounts/Rewards

Everyone loves to get rewards. It’s classic human behavior. Promotions in the form of discounts and rewards will not only entice new customers to buy your products and services but it will also reinforce repeat behavior.

d. Transformation Pictures or Videos

Your social media page is an extension of your portfolio. Many clients who book online are often people who’ve seen a beautiful hair color on Instagram or Facebook. Share before-and-after pictures and videos to show potential clients what you and your team can do for their hair.

TIP: Take pictures with clean, uncluttered background. They often receive the most love on social media because they’re easy on the eyes and put the focus on the hair. Watermarks are great, but make sure they don’t take attention away from the work.

4. Post Regularly

To forge relationships with your clients and potential clients, you must be consistent in posting updates. This signals that you are up to date with the current trends and willing to interact with your community.

Facebook allows you to schedule posts ahead of time, and there are a number of Instagram schedulers available. Apps like Planoly, Hootsuite, Plann, and Later offer free basic plans that allow you to upload, schedule, and curate your posts ahead of time.

TIP: Facebook and Instagram business pages have built-in analytics that will tell you when your audience is online. Post during peak hours for maximum exposure.

5. Engage Your Audience

Many people like sharing their thoughts on social media. Use that to your advantage by creating conversations with your clients. Join and create Facebook groups. Ask questions that might interest them. Give away products that they might like and possibly, repost (free advertising!). And most importantly, respond to comments and inquiries. This sends a message that you value their voice. Doing these will not only boost your social media authority, but also help you build long-term relationships with clients.

5 Easy Ways to Retain Salon Clients & Transform Them Into Lifelong Fans

Attracting salon clients takes a lot of work, but the true challenge lies in retaining them. All too often we see many salons looking virtually empty, which sends a bad message to onlooking potential customers. Empty Salon = Bad Service.

And so you have your salon’s website and salon’s social media marketing down pat, but you can’t seem to re-book and keep clients. What could possibly be wrong? It might have something to do with your client retention system. If you don’t have one in place, then we suggest creating one.

Below are 5 tried-and-tested ways on how to retain your salon clients and create loyalty!

Tips for Retaining Salon Clients

measure-client-retention

Measure Your Retention

As a business owner, you need to have a system in place to measure your client retention. Keep track of the dates and how frequent your new and existing clients come to your salon. Doing so helps you set retention goals based on the data that you have and allows you to identify clients that you need to focus on.

Reward Your Staff & Clients

Everyone responds positively to a reward. When you provide incentives to your staff in exchange for improving their client retention, they’ll be more motivated to work. Rewards like giving them a raise or throwing them a mini-party are excellent strategies to inspire your team to reach your business goal.

The same can be said about client rewards. Clients who are offered referral/next-visit discounts or personalized welcome kits are more likely to book a service again. These rewards make them feel that you value their loyalty, thus reinforcing repeat behavior. Programs like Point Rewards, Punch Card, and VIP Tiers have also been proven to be effective in encouraging clients to continue visiting their local salon.

Pre-book Clients

Pre-booking your clients for the next appointment before they leave your salon is an effective way to increase the possibility of them returning. Emphasize the benefits of maintaining their look or booking ahead of time during the busy holiday season.

This is also the perfect opportunity to mention your Pre-Pay Program. This guarantees that they will keep coming and frequent your salon since they’ve already paid for it. Aside from that, it’s also been statistically proven that clients who’ve pre-paid the service tend to spend more afterwards, adding to your sales goals.

Sell Retail

First-time clients tend to return when they purchase retail, especially if they liked the product. And once that happens, you’ve just earned their trust. This is the only opportunity you need to start building a relationship with a new client.

Have them test new products you’re thinking of bringing to your salon and ask for their opinion. This will send a message that you don’t only see them as a client but also a part of your salon family.

Tips-for-Retaining-Salon-Clients

TIP: Carry salon exclusive products like Oway so clients have no option but to visit you to get what they need.

Be Consistent

salon-client-retention-tips

Hairdressing is an experience-driven industry.

Clients come to you to relax and have a great time. So when they consistently receive excellent service, they’re sure to book again and again.

Forge friendships with them by sending personal notes, listening to their concerns, and creating a pleasing customer experience each time they visit. The next thing you know, they’ll be telling their friends and family how amazing your salon is.

Hair Stylists: These 3 Questions Will Help You Charge What You Are Worth

$

0

Charging what you are worth as a hair stylist is such an important part of professionalism in our industry. Some stylists start the game with confidence and a deeper understanding and comfort with charging for their skills, time, and product. Many stylists, however, struggle with charging what they are worth.

Why is there such disparity in the hair world? Why is charging what you’re worth so hard for so many? Some of this comes from our own sense of professional worth, our beliefs about the clientele we can attract, and the culture around the products we use.

Are You Worthy?

Do you know your stuff? If you want to charge what you’re worth, you need to be worthy and feel worthy.

charging-your-worth

Being worthy starts with the basics: graduating cosmetology school, maintaining your license in good standing, then taking continuing education every chance you get.

As Holistic Hair Stylists, we take ourselves seriously when it comes to skill and expertise. We take classes to enhance our craft, our skills, and to stay contemporary, inspired, advancing our art.

One of the fundamental aspects of being a holistic hairstylist is INTEGRITY. Continually striving for excellence is a part of that. You are doing the work, you got the skills, you are worthy!

Is Your Vibe Worthy?

Your-vibe-attracts-your-tribe.

As they say, your vibe attracts your tribe. Are you cultivating a clientele that wants what you specifically offer? Are you putting out the vibes to attract what you want?

We are all wonderfully unique and we each have our own special vibe. The vibe you have can either attract or not attract what you want. That energy around us can come from who we are as a person, issues affecting our lives or even what happened to us on the way to work. Having an awareness of what our vibe is in person, online, even on the phone can really be helpful when trying to cultivate a specific professional identity.

Our vibe is connected to our artistic voice.

It is the energy of our personality signature. It is worth exploring and worth nurturing. You have permission to indulge. Do the things that help you feel like the awesome stylist you know you are. Set goals. Participate in self-care. When you show up to work all full of love for yourself and what you do, it’s hard NOT to be attracted to that. Love yourself! You are worthy!

Is Your Product Worthy?

Being a colorist is a magical combination of chemistry, color theory, practical skills, knowledge based on education and experience, and your own personal artistry. You can be limited or given wings to fly with the products you choose. Holistic Hair Stylists who use products that perform at the highest level, enhance the health of the client’s hair and scalp, and provide an environment free of toxins guarantee themselves success in any market.

As an Oway user and stylist, I find extreme benefit in the ability to truly meet my clients’ needs ethically and in a healthy way, for all of us. And how impressed are they when they learn these products aren’t just gorgeous, effective, and organic? The ingredients are farm to chair from Bologna, Italy or fair traded globally!

The more my clients learn about the layers of awesome that is Oway, and how fabulous their hair and scalp feel over time, the more invested they are in me as a stylist and the products they are using. As cheesy as it sounds, the products really do sell themselves. All we need to do as stylists is educate clients on what we are using and why and they happily purchase what they need.

Knowing your product, how it works, why it works, and using it to the best of your professional ability creates value in you as a stylist and helps your clients long term with hair and scalp health. Win-win.

Know Your Worth

You have the skills. You got them good vibes. You are using fabulous products. Now, check in with other professionals in your area, and around the country and set your price points.

You know what you need. You know what you are worth. And you know you are providing an unparalleled experience with the products you have chosen. Charge what you are worth with confidence and pride. And check in each year to see what needs to change.

You are a holistic hairstylist. You are going to grow and change, so price accordingly.
