Seasonal Affective Disorder: Holistic Ways to Combat SAD-ness

$

Lately you might be wondering why you or your clients have been feeling a little extra moody or exhausted. This is pretty common as the daytime grows shorter and nighttime longer, especially in the winter months.

But how do you determine if it’s just a case of the seasonal blues or something more serious?

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is a subtype of depression that usually begins in the fall and continue into the winter months. In the US, 4-6% of Americans experience SAD, while 10-20% experience a milder form of this condition.

It is often characterized by:

  • Depressive Episodes
  • Low Energy
  • Sleeping Troubles
  • Lack of Appetite
  • Difficulty Focusing
  • Oversleeping

As a holistic hair stylist, it is important to surround yourself with positive energy. While there’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder, there are several holistic treatments you can do in your salon and at home to help prevent or ease symptoms you or your clients are experiencing.

mindfulness-meditation

Holistic Ways to Fight Seasonal Affective Disorder

Meditation

Meditation helps transform negative thoughts into positive ones. In fact, a recent study by Psychiatry Research has found that individuals who receive Mindfulness-Based Interventions indicated reduced stress markers and develop enhanced resilience to stress.

The great thing about Meditation is it comes in various forms, so you get to choose which method best fits your lifestyle. You can apply it even when going about your daily routine. Starting your day with an empowering mantra can be especially helpful when dealing with anxiety and stress. The key is to focus on the present moment and be aware of what’s happening around you.

Light Therapy

SAD is triggered by lack of sunlight. The use of Light Therapy counteracts the symptoms by helping restore your body’s natural daily rhythms, also known as circadian rhythm.

The popular Light Therapy methods involve the use of a Dawn Simulator, a device that simulates the gradual appearance of morning light and a Light Box, which uses high-intensity lights equivalent to daylight. Both methods help synchronize sleep/wake up patterns with your current lifestyle.

Exercise

Nothing beats the rejuvenating feeling after a good workout. When exercising, your body releases feel-good endorphins, chemicals that trigger the feeling of euphoria and general well-being.

Moderate exercise like running, walking, and yoga is great for relieving stress and keeping your mind and body active. While they may not seem strenuous, they help keep depression and anxiety at bay once you start feeling better.

Aromatherapy

Essential-OilsEssential oils are known for their anti-depressant benefits. A whiff of therapeutic oils from herbs and plants like Citrus fruits, Rosemary, and Lemongrass instantly gives the mind and body a boost of energy and mental clarity.

Pro Tip: You can create custom scents by combining them with other essential oils. Check out our essential oil recipes here.

Journaling

This may sound a little old school, but writing in a journal is still one of most effective ways of managing depression. Expressing yourself on paper helps make you more self-aware and more in control of your thoughts and emotions. Plus, you can literally say anything in it without worrying about what other people might think of you.

In addition to these holistic treatments, making significant lifestyle changes can assist in improving your mood. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and cutting bad habits out of your life are just a few examples. However, we still highly recommend seeking professional help if these methods do not work.

Have you tried any of these methods? Feel free to share your experience in the comments!

The Ultimate Winter Skin Care Routine for Healthy, Glowing Skin

$

0

The winds are changing and the temperature’s dropping – which means Winter is just around the corner! As beautiful as the snow is, we can’t help but dread its side effects.

From dry, itchy skin to the rapid appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, the harsh winter air can wreak havoc on the skin. Thankfully, all you need to do is to make a few swaps and additions to your current skin care routine to reverse the situation and keep it protected for the rest of the season.

Organic Skin Care Tips for Winter

Cleanse

Any skin care routine begins with a good cleanse. But using the right cleanser is also as important. During winter, the cold, frigid air can cause the skin to be extremely dry and hypersensitive. Using the wrong cleanser can aggravate the skin’s current condition, and cause premature aging and wrinkles (gasp!).

Choosing a gentler alternative, preferably with zero surfactants and alcohol (the drying type) is a step in the right direction. Alcohol and surfactant-laden cleansers typically have a high alkaline pH level, which leaves the skin dry and dull.

Facial cleansing creams, like Oway Perfect Skin Cleansing Cream, do not contain surfactants and only uses a milder alcohol type to help balance the skin’s pH level and effectively remove makeup and other impurities. It also contains super plant powers from Cistus Incanus. Also known as the Plant of Beauty, this super botanical contains a high content of polyphenols, essential amino acids and L-Glutamine to promote healthy, compact and elastic skin.

PRO TIP: Using a gentle cotton cloth or towel after rinsing is vital as well, so as not to irritate the skin.

Exfoliate

We know what you’re thinking – won’t exfoliation dehydrate the skin further? Not if you do it the right way. The cold air outside and dry indoor heating can suck the moisture from your skin, causing it to dry and flake.

Exfoliating allows for new cells to regenerate and for moisturizers to penetrate, helping you achieve a much cleaner, balanced skin without irritating it.

For more oily skin types, scrubbing once a week is recommended while those with more delicate skin types can exfoliate once a month or every two weeks.

Winter-Skincare-Products

Tone

After cleansing and exfoliating, the skin’s pH is going to be slightly alkaline, hence why it looks a bit dry. Alcohol-free toners like Oway De-Stress Tonic Potion help recalibrate the skin to its optimal level, leaving you with healthier, glowing complexion.

Oway De-Stress Tonic Potion has ingredients like Organic Echinecea and Alpine Skullcap which contain rich amounts of flavonoids, tannins, and polysaccharides. These components help fight free radicals and stimulate the skin’s lipid production, leaving it feeling refreshed and stress-free.

Moisturize

Oway-Radiance-Face-Balm

Not all moisturizers are created equal. During this time of year, you need to adjust your moisturizer and opt for an ultra-hydrating one.

Lightweight serums and moisturizers do not cut it anymore. Moisturizing creams, like Oway Radiance Face Balm, are much more suitable for they are packed with Vitamin E and fatty acids derived from Biodynamic Walnut, Organic Chia Seeds, and Pataua Oil, which are known for their ability to lock in moisture and fight skin aging more effectively than other ingredients.

Oway Radiance Face Balm also combines the power of Cistus Incanus, amino acids, and L-Glutamine to strengthen the skin’s antioxidant defense barrier, which in turn enhances the skin’s repair process.

PRO TIP: Do not forget to apply moisturizer on the neck as well. It so often neglected that it is usually one of the parts that show the first signs of aging.

Boost

oway-boostersFor an even more effective and enhanced result, combine your face cream with boosters, like our plant-powered Oway Regenerating and Replumping Booster. These concentrates contain bioretinols and powerful antioxidants known for protecting the skin against external aggressors and stimulating collagen production.

Each drop of Oway Regenerating Booster contains extracts of the Amazonian fruit Physalis Angulata, the ingredient responsible for optimizing the skin cells’ vitality and function. As a result, skin feels soothed and full of life.

Meanwhile, Oway Replumping Booster uses a plant-based complex that mimics the benefits of retinol, minus the unpleasant side effects. Derived from Bidens Pilosa extract and Cotton and Linen oils, this bioretinol performs a wrinkle-eliminating action by stimulating collagen synthesis. In fact, various ex vivo tests on 40 female subjects have found that using Bioretinol has shown over 25% decrease in wrinkles and increase in skin density.

Do you have a winter skin care routine that you swear by?

Educator Spotlight: Karla Marabello

This month, our Educator Spotlight is on Karla Marabello of Kbello Organic Hair. Her salon in Midland Park, New Jersey is a product of hard work, determination, and genuine passion for providing her clients a toxin-free salon experience. No wonder why this incredible lady is already at the top of her game at such a young age.

We’re excited for you to get to know Karla more.

Read her interview below!

What gives you motivation and inspiration in your salon business?

I have found motivation and inspiration through my clients. I want to be able to provide them with not only the service and products they need, but also what they want. I find that there are so many people who desire a healthier salon environment and better-quality products. Many of my clients have had health issues, including allergies, or simply enjoy living a natural and healthy lifestyle, which has led them to be more aware of the chemicals in standard hair products. Because I enjoy a healthy lifestyle myself, I feel connected to my clients in more ways than one. I feel responsible to guide them to the best hair care alternatives to meet their desires and to provide a clean air salon experience, free of toxins, and harmful products.

kbello-organic-hair-salon

What are some helpful ideas for others starting out with OWAY and O&M products?

Be sure to listen to your clients’ feedback. They know what they want and what they like, and it’s up to us to deliver that. OWAY and O&M are two outstanding luxury haircare lines that have held their service and the ingredients they use to high standards to provide top quality results. It’s okay to start slow. A small intro package is a great way to explore the products yourself before introducing clients to a new hair care line. If you believe in the products you are providing, your clients will too.

What made you interested you in getting involved in this industry?

I really have to say “hairdressing” picked me. I’ve been doing hair since I was a kid. I was always playing with my sister’s hair and blowing out my mom’s hair, and I would do my friends’ hair for occasions. I also have family members who have been in the industry for years. What I was really drawn to was the people. I wanted to learn from people and their experiences and be able to share knowledge, both emotional and textbook. I truly enjoy connecting with my clients.

What advice would you share with others wanting to market themselves in the holistic/organic lifestyle?

Choosing to become a holistic hairstylist and owning an organic salon has been the most rewarding experience of my entire career for many reasons, one being the relief for many clients that there is an alternative option for them. We have come a long way to be able to call hair color organic, but the fact is we still need certain chemicals and ingredients for color to perform at a professional level. The holistic/organic market is huge and there are many clients to reach but be prepared with your facts and know your product ingredients because today’s clients are educated.

What is your favorite hair type to work with and why?

I would say my favorite hair type is a medium thickness, wavy with a little texture because it is easiest to manipulate and will hold a variety of styles.

Any favorite products that you just can’t live without?

oway-glossy-nectar

I love Oway Glossy Nectar for a smooth and shiny quick blowout with a little Oway Volumizing Root Spray for fullness. For a final touch, I set my style with Oway Sculpting Mist (love this liquid styling spray!). It is so versatile and can be used with a spritz or two for light hold or layered for a strong hold. Bonus: It combs out so easy without any flake! O&M Know Knott is also a must-have for detangling and is an excellent foundation product. I also can’t live without a little O&M Surf Bomb in my life.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy quiet time, taking in fresh air outdoors, catching up with friends and family, and I try to get to a yoga class as often as possible. I also love to shop for anything from clothes, shoes, food, products, and home décor. I probably spend way too much time at Home Goods.

What do you love most about educating other Holistic Hair Tribe members or new members?

I love meeting like-minded professionals. We can all learn so much from each other through our experiences and help create new ones for each other as well. Unfortunately, the Holistic Hair Tribe is still small, but growing by the day. I love being able to introduce people to something they didn’t know about before and seeing some of the “Aha” moments when they realize it is possible to have professional results without toxic ingredients.

original-mineral-know-knott-spray

What is your next step in your career as an educator and stylist?

I am currently focused on building my staff at my 3-year young salon and looking for professionals interested in holistic and organic hair care to join my team. It has been quite a journey and my business is growing daily. I want to continue to provide a healthy and positive haircare experience to my current clientele and to welcome new clients along the way. I would also like to expand on product offerings to body care, health and beauty. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for growing companies like OWAY and O&M as well.

5 Health Signs Your Lips Reveal That You Shouldn’t Ignore

$
0
0

They say our choice of lipstick shade tells a lot about us. But did you know the natural state of our lips can also provide a window into our health?

Each of us get dry lips or sores at one point or another. But if you find yourself constantly having lip issues, then your lips could be tipping you off to something more serious.

Health Warning Signs Your Lips Are Telling You

Dry and Chapped Lips

organic-lip-balm

Dry and chapped lips are obvious signs of dehydration. While the immediate solution is to pour yourself a glass of water, it doesn’t hurt to add another layer of protection. Using an Organic Lip Balm that contains nourishing ingredients like Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, and Sunflower can help hydrate and heal cracked lips.

If your lips still feel dry afterwards, an exfoliating lip scrub might just do the trick. No scrubs? Mixing olive oil and sugar is also a great exfoliation technique.

Cold Sores

Don’t you just hate it when you wake up to find a painful blister on or around your lips? Cold sores are an infection caused by the resurgence of the herpes virus, which have been hiding in our body. It attacks when our immune system is weak, possibly due to poor diet, lack of sleep and rest, and poor sunlight.

As soon as you see signs of a developing cold sore, call your physician to request for a topical medication to prevent it from spreading.

Lip Discoloration

Discolored lips can be a symptom of various health conditions. Pale lips can mean you’re not getting some sunlight, anemia, or iron deficiency.

Bluish lips may indicate heart and lung problems. Whatever the case, it is important that you seek a professional’s opinion as soon as symptoms arise.

Cracked Corners

Developing cracks in the corners of your lips are normal, particularly during winter. The harsh cold air can suck the moisture out of our skin, causing it to crack. However, cracked corners can also be due to a yeast infection, which is fairly common for people who drool in their sleep or wear a retainer.

The dermis around our mouth is very thin. This makes it easy for infections like the fungus candida to latch itself onto the skin. An anti-yeast prescription from your doctor will make it go away easily.

Those with high level of glucose in their blood or vitamin B deficiency are also prone to cracked lips. If you think you have this, making changes in your diet is necessary. Avoiding consuming too many calories, particularly sugary beverages is a step in the right direction. Taking supplements rich in vitamin B, zinc, and iron can also help with nutrient deficiency.

lip-health

Swollen and Tender Lips

oway-hnectar

Having that Angelina Jolie pout may look cute, but if your lips feels swollen and tender, you should contact your physician immediately. Inflamed and tender lips can be strong indicator of an allergic reaction. You might be sensitive to a certain ingredient in your face wash, lip stick, or sometimes hair color.

Some hair colors contain ingredients many people are allergic to, such as Paraphenylenediamine or PPD. Choosing a hair color that contains zero PPD like O&M CØR.color and Oway Hnectar is the safest way to avoid an allergic reaction.

oway-own-way

Did you know Oway used to make fragrance back in the day? Next year, Oway is paying homage to the brand’s roots with the launch of OWN Way Fragrance – a limited edition fragrance made entirely of plant-based ingredients.

While most of the perfumes in the market are filled with synthetic ingredients and toxic chemicals, OWN Way Fragrance utilizes the therapeautic and curative properties of botanicals which are exclusively grown on Ortofficina, our biodynamic family farm in Bologna, Italy.

This precious fragrance is also packaged in sophisticated matte Onyx and Lava flask, making it a perfect gift for fragrance enthusiasts, or better yet – for yourself!

O&M CØR.Rebond

You’ve spoken, and we listened. Finally, O&M CØR.Rebond is coming to American salons! CØR.Rebond is a 2-step rebonding treatment done DURING the coloring/bleaching process and a POST-COLOR treatment to link damaged keratin bonds in the hair.

O&M CØR.Rebond uses a blend of amino acids to repair and plump the keratin protein in the hair, which is often compromised during color and bleaching services.

O&M Q.Color (Men’s Color)

In 2018, you will finally get your hands on O&M Q.Color, our gel-based hair color specially made for men. It comes in 4 natural shades, allowing you to create at least 8 various looks depending on your timing.

O&M-Q.Color

And here’s the best part: It only takes 5-10 minutes to process! The Taurine included in the formula and it’s gel-like consistency allows for the color to quickly adhere to the hair and mimic the natural color of the strands, giving it a well-blended result and a beautiful fade.

How to Treat Hair Loss and Scalp Issues the Organic Way

$
0
0

Hair loss and scalp disorders affect so many people and it is so disheartening to those experiencing it. As a holistic hair stylist, never did I imagine that my main flow of business would be guests with hair loss and scalp issues. It is rewarding and fulfilling to not only help them regain hair but also improve their lives and show them a healthier lifestyle that will support their journey to healthy hair growth and scalp.

But like any other treatment, committing to a treatment plan is essential to see actual results. And it all begins with a consultation.

Consultation

The key to treating hair loss and scalp issues is to perform a thorough consultation with guests. Not only does it help determine a treatment plan, it also helps to understand the cause of the hair loss, such as medicine, lifestyle, heredity, styling habits, diet, among others.

The Oway Tricho-analyzer is the perfect tool to use during the consultation as it provides a good picture (literally) of what is going on with the scalp. It helps gauge the number of treatments necessary to help remedy whatever issue is at hand. It magnifies the scalp up to 200 times and projects a clear image that both you and your guest can see and discuss. This also allows clients to follow their progress throughout the treatment journey.

Treatment

As a hair loss and scalp expert, I provide my clients personalized treatments. Each scalp condition is unique, thus treatments should be customized according to each condition. I am glad I found Oway because its complete line of Hair Loss and Scalp Treatments allows me to address various types of issues.

Once a treatment plan is in place, I determine the amount of product to be used on the location of concern. If the issue is localized in one area, treat that area and around the outside of it.

hair-and-scalp-analyzer

PRO TIP: Don’t waste product and time by treating a guest’s entire head when the problem area is located in one spot. It is important to make a profile for each guest to keep track of their treatments. A great way to keep you and your guests on the same page with the treatment plan is to jot down a quote of what and how many treatments you are estimating they will need, and what take home products will support their treatments.

A good idea is to write numbers on their take home product labels to show the order in which their regimen should follow, or like me, use recycled paper stickers on products to avoid confusion.

Keeping your hair loss and scalp treatment appointments in a private setting is something your guests will really appreciate. If you don’t have a closed space, invest in a dressing screen that can be pulled out for treatment appointments, and then folded and tucked away afterwards. Remember to take headshots to show the treatment progress to show future guests.

Results

Here are 3 examples of results I have achieved with the Oway treatments on my guests:

Rebalancing Treatment

I use Oway Rebalancing Treatment for clients with oily scalp. The botanical blend of Biodynamic Sage, Euphrasia Extract, and Bugbane Extract in Amazonian Control Clay, Pure Biodynamic Sage, and Sebum Balance Hair Bath help combat sebaceous hyperactivity, which causes yellow spots and clumps of dandruff to appear on the scalp.

Purifying Treatment for Oily Scalp + Hair Loss Treatment

Many of my clients who complain about hair loss often suffer from dry or oily dandruff as well. For this type of condition, I combine Oway’s Purifying Treatment with the Hair Loss Scalp Care Treatment.

The Purifying Treatment is highly effective in eradicating Malassezia globosa, the dandruff-causing fungus that attacks the scalp. Then we move on to the Hair Loss Treatment, which uses Denisplant, Hair Spa Complex, and Vegetable Stem Cells to revive the hair follicle cells and stimulate hair growth.

Soothing Treatment

For my clients who suffer from red, sensitive scalps, I always turn to Oway’s Soothing Treatment to heal and relieve irritation. This complete treatment contains the Soothing Hair Bath, Zanthoxylum Soothing Gel, Pure Biodynamic Helichrysum, and Soothing Remedy Spot Treatment to calm and comfort sensitive skin, particularly those who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, lesions, and abrasions.

After Care

organic-styling-products

Following an after-care program is as important as the in-salon treatments.

This allows you to effectively monitor your clients’ progress and ensure that they are not using products at home that may compromise the treatment. This includes hair care and styling product.

The Oway products I often recommend to guests with hair loss and scalp issues are:

Benefits of Hair Loss and Scalp Treatments

With the Oway Hair Loss and Scalp Treatments, you will be helping people get their self-confidence back. You may even be the reason for their healthier lifestyle changes that, more often than not, occur after the treatments.

These treatments have allowed me to have a whole new kind of experience with my guests. A greater connection is formed, and I truly feel a part of their journey to achieve great results with their challenges. This is just a sliver of what Oway Hair Loss and Scalp Treatments entail.

Dandruff? 6 Reasons That Make the Scalp Itchy & Flaky

$
0
0

Winter dandruff is here! And while it’s a normal occurrence during this time of year, it doesn’t mean you can’t prevent it.

The first step to eliminating dandruff is knowing how it all begins.

Understanding Dandruff

A lot of people think dandruff is a product of poor hygiene. Hence, many of us feel quite embarrassed getting the “flakes” as we discreetly dust them off our shoulders. But this is a false analogy.

malassezia-globosa

Like any scalp condition, dandruff is brought about by various factors.

Typically, dandruff occurs when the scalp’s biological balance is disturbed, and as a result sends the production of naturally occurring scalp fungus, Malassezia globosa, into overdrive. It burrows deep into the hair follicle, irritating the scalp and causing it to shed dead skin cells faster than normal. In some cases, it triggers seborrheic dermatitis, particularly when the scalp is oily.

Factors That Cause Dandruff

Hormone Imbalance

Hormones play a key role in our body’s oil production. Women, for instance, experience an upsurge in oil production when their estrogen level drops and progesterone levels increase.

While oil is essential to keep the scalp’s moisture balance normal, excess oil triggers growth of the yeast-like fungus Malassezia globosa, resulting to dandruff. To address oily scalps, natural treatments like Oway Purifying Hair Bath for Oily Scalps help rebalance the skin’s moisture levels while eradicating Malassezia globosa.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is a well-known diuretic, which means it promotes increased production of urine. Therefore, excess alcohol consumption will trigger frequent trips to the bathroom, dehydrating the body and ultimately – the skin.

Harsh Hair Products

Hair care products, especially those containing harsh, synthetic chemicals and toxic ingredients, can rob the scalp of its natural pH and destroy the barrier that locks in moisture. This leaves the scalp vulnerable to sensitivity, irritation, and bacteria, which leads to dandruff.

Weather Extremes

Extreme weather conditions can either strip the scalp of its natural oils, or cause an overproduction of sebum. For example, winter is known for sucking the moisture out of the scalp, leaving it cracked and irritated. To repair it, treatments containing Thyme, Rosemary, and Rice Wax (like Oway Purifying Scalp Treatment Kit) are highly effective in restoring the scalp’s moisture balance, which prevents dandruff from further developing.

Nutrient Deficiency

Dandruff-Causes

Dandruff can be our body’s way of telling us that something is not right. Research has shown that individuals who rarely consume foods rich in vitamin B12, vitamin E, zinc, and essential fatty acids are more prone to dandruff than those who eat a balanced diet.

Vitamin B12, vitamin E, zinc, and fatty acids are essential nutrients that stimulate blood flow to the scalp and fights off free radicals that cause various scalp issues.

Stress

Many experts believe that there is a link between stress and dandruff. Because when we are stressed, we trigger production of certain hormones, which, as previously mentioned, causes overproduction of sebum on the scalp. This creates an ideal condition for the Malassezia globosa to thrive.

How to Treat Dandruff

Aside from scalp conditions that can only be treated by a dermatologist, scalp issues can be easily prevented.

Oway-Purifying-Scalp-Treatment
  • Avoid stress as much as possible. Exercising regularly helps reduce stress hormones and stimulates our body to produce endorphins, a.k.a. the happy hormone.
  • Eat foods rich in Vitamin B12, vitamin E, zinc, and essential fatty acids.
  • Regulate your alcohol intake.
  • Avoid hair products that contain harsh chemicals. They rob the hair and scalp of their natural oils, which often leads to dandruff.
  • Go natural. Incorporate essential oils and herbal treatments with antioxidant and anti-fungal properties into your hair care routine to eradicate the fungus that’s causing dandruff.

From the artists who wore black in support of the #TimesUp movement down to head-turning looks that graced the occasion, this year’s Golden Globe Awards is definitely one for the books.

Simply Organic Beauty Educators Rebecca Gregory and Wayne Lewis picked 6 of the best hair colors and hairstyles from the red carpet, and provided some really useful tips on how to recreate them in your salon using our ammonia-free lines: Oway and O&M. Check them out below!

Top Golden Globes 2018 Red Carpet Looks

Emma Stone

COLOR

To achieve Emma Stone’s base color, use O&M CØR.color 8.3 Light Golden Blonde with O&M COR.color 8.34 Light Golden Copper Blonde. Then, paint some pieces to frame the face with O&M Paint Powder Clay Lightener. Finally, glaze the hair with O&M CØR.color 0.00 Clear to lock in the tone and add incredible shine for the red carpet.

STYLE

Condition the hair with O&M Fine Intellect Conditioner, then spritz the hair with O&M Atonic Hair Thickening Spritz. Dry hair to 50% dry then add more Atonic and dry to 80% dry.

Add O&M Rootalicious Root Lift Spray by putting into palms then spreading through the hair. Dry with a natural bristle round brush to create volume. Once dry, make a side part from forehead to crown then pull one side back and secure with bobby pins, then pull other side over, twist and pin to create a ballerina low bun on crown. Pull a few pieces from the side, then sweep back and allow to fall like a soft fringe. Finish by spraying O&M Original Queenie Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Michelle Williams

COLOR

You can recreate Michelle Williams’ modern angelic blonde using the O&M Ammonia Free Keratin Powder Lightener on scalp. Once the hair lifts, use a nourishing shampoo and treatment like O&M The Power Base Protein Treatment before toning.

To tone, use the O&M CØR.color Sand Toner, with O&M CØR.color 5 vol Activator for 20 minutes.

STYLE

Spray towel dried hair with O&M Know Knott Detangling Spray then blow dry remove most or the moisture. In the palms of your hand, mix O&M K-Gravel Texture Clay and O&M C-Paste Texture Cream together and spread evenly throughout the hair. Style with fingers to create an effortless soft pixie look.

Kate Hudson

COLOR

After shaving her hair off, Kate’s hair was naturally dark. Use the O&M CØR.color 12.81 Super Blond Pearl Ash and add some highlights with O&M Ammonia Free Pearl Blue Powder Lightener to create texture and  glow from forehead to the crown.

To tone, O&M CØR.color 9.8 Very Light Pearl Blonde is perfect to remove unwanted warmth and create a natural California blonde.

STYLE

Spray O&M Atonic Hair Thickening Spritz through the hair and dry until most of the moisture is removed. Spritz O&M Surf Bomb Sea Salt Texture Spray to hair and dry with a Denman brush to keep hair smooth and flat. Use O&M C-Paste Texture Cream to separate pieces for a polished textured look. Add a black headband to finish this look.

COLOR

Add some interest to the hair by adding pops of painted strands with O&M Paint Powder Clay Lightener. Then, layer this with O&M CØR.color 8.7 Light Brunette Blonde, which will add very natural sunkissed highlights. This is also a great time to add O&M CØR.color 0.00 Clear all over the hair to protect it from fade and seal the ends for heat protection.

STYLE

Spray O&M Atonic Hair Thickening Spritz onto damp hair and add a few drops of O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum to the ends, then dry to 80% dry and follow with O&M Rootalicious Root Lift Spray. Continue to dry. To add volume, create lift on one side of the face with a round brush by blowing off and up, creating a small wave. Set with O&M Original Queenie Firm Hold Hair Spray. Pull hair back to a low soft ponytail, loop hair up and wrap it around the ponytail.

Finally, secure with a fringe pin to hide the band holding the ponytail. Spray with O&M Frizzy Logic Finishing Shine Spray to finish the look.

COLOR

To achieve Margot Robbie’s gorgeous Golden Globes Glam look, do a shadow melt technique with Oway Hcolor 7.01 Ash Natural Blonde. Then, add babylights with Oway Hbleach Butter Cream Lightener with Oway Hcatalyst 20 Volume Cream Developer. Be sure to decolorize first the hair to a pale yellow/white and tone with Oway Hcolor 11.17 Frosted Platinum over some of the prelightened hair. Leave some of the babylights out to add blonde dimension.

STYLE

Following the color service, wash with Oway Hbalance Post-Color Neutralizing Shampoo and condition with Oway Hbalance Post-Color pH Mask to restore the hair to its proper PH. Spray some Oway Volumizing Root Spray throughout and add Oway Glossy Nectar before blow-drying. Use a natural bristle round brush to create some bounce through the ends.

COLOR

Use Oway Hcolor 5.32 CDI Irisee Golden Light Brown with Oway Htone 9 Volume Cream Developer as a root melt application. Then, do a hand painting balayage using Oway Hbleach Butter Cream Lightener. Working heavier with your product towards the ends of the hair, lift to a yellow/white remaining pigment and then glaze with Oway Hcolor 9.1 Ash Very Light Blonde and Oway Htone 9 Volume Cream Developer. This will create a beautiful sparkling root melt finish with light, glamorous ends.

A new year is a time to let go of old habits that don’t work and embrace new ones. Whether you’re aiming to take your retail game to the next level or get more clients this year, knowing the latest salon business trends and applying them to your salon practices may help you reach your goals sooner than expected.

2018 is a good year for our #HolisticHairTribe as we’ll see a rise in clients, and yes including men, looking for healthier alternatives. Technology-driven business models will also gain momentum. Learn more about them below as well as the other trends that will dominate 2018!

2018 Salon Business Trends

Natural and Organic Salon Products

Now more than ever, consumers are becoming more aware of the benefits of reducing their chemical exposure – and rightly so! With a growing number of bloggers and influencers (and video streaming behemoth, Netflix) constantly sharing information about the toxins commonly found in our food and personal care products, it’s not surprising consumers will be more actively searching for brands that use organic ingredients this year. In fact, the demand for organic beauty products is projected to reach $13.2 billion this year according to the Transparency Market.

organic-hair-styling-products

While 100% organic hair color isn’t possible (yet), introducing potential clients to your holistic hair products and practices is the best way to reduce their toxic exposure (and yours)! Professional ammonia-free color brands like Oway’s Hcolor or Original & Mineral’s CØR.color line are filled with high percentages of biodynamic and organic ingredients, innovative color technologies and an extraordinary low chemical content.

Due to recent ingredient innovations and a demand for more health-conscious formulations, these hair color lines still achieve impeccable results and will surely make any doubter a lifelong client.

PRO TIP: Take advantage of this demand for cleaner products by beefing up your retail offering. Check out these discounted hair styling packages.

Holistic Salon Treatments

holistic-lifestyle

Apart from natural salon products, 2018 will also center on wellness and mindfulness. With the heightened awareness on the link between mind and body, clients will be looking to include holistic salon treatments in their regimen, which will not only make their hair look healthy, but also their overall well-being.

PRO TIP: Incorporate soothing scalp treatments such as our Herbs & Peel treatment and new Head.Spa, as well as aromatherapy in your salon menu to attract holistic-minded clients.

Eco-Friendly Practices

With the wildfires, floods, and catastrophic hurricanes becoming all too common in the US, especially last year, the national conversation on climate change has noticeably begun to shift. Now, consumers actively seek businesses that promote eco-friendly practices. From cruelty-free, toxin-free products to zero-waste packaging, clients are becoming increasingly conscious of how their purchases affect the environment.

oway-refill-station

PRO TIP: Set up a Refill Station in your salon so both you and your clients can work together to reduce salon waste.

Instagram Marketing

With more than 800 million active users, Instagram continues to be one of the top platforms to promote your business, next to Facebook. As the social media giant continues to upgrade its features (users can now shop products with a single tap on a photo), more and more businesses are looking for ways to integrate Instagram in their marketing strategy.

As hair stylists, Instagram is the best platform to share and promote our work. Also, many clients nowadays prefer a salon with an active business page where they can see the before-and-after pictures. For the latest social media marketing ideas for hair salons (including a killer Insta-strategy), check our free training video: [5 Untold Secrets of A Successful Social Media Strategy For Salons & Hair Stylists].

PRO TIP: According to a 2012 study, social media plays a huge role in influencing a consumer’s purchasing behavior. Use this to your advantage by regularly updating your Instagram page.

Live Videos & Tutorials

Today’s customers are no longer content with traditional marketing. They can tell when they are being sold something from a mile away. What they crave is a more perceptible, interactive form of content that will allow them to make effective decisions.

Statistics indicate that “millennials”, who are expected to become the most influential customer demographic this year and the years to come, consume more digital videos than the average customer, which is why industry experts are predicting that we will see a surge in video content and live broadcasts in 2018.

PRO TIP: This is a perfect opportunity for your salon and your team of stylists to showcase what you can offer. Post live hair painting and hair styling tutorials to capture the interest of your target demographic. Videos nowadays get more likes and shares from people on Facebook, so this could also be a great way to advertise your salon.

Continuing Education

As customers become more informed of the current trends as well as the benefits and dangers of certain ingredients, the salon industry has become more education-focused. From 2-day education retreats to advanced color classes to webinars, you will notice an increase in professional development courses this year.

PRO TIP: Always keep an eye out for Simply Organic’s education classes. We also offer free online trainings and webinars for holistic hair stylists like you. More classes will be added soon.

Men’s Products & Services

2018 will see a boom in male grooming products and services especially now that men’s perception of self-care is undergoing a paradigm shift. Many are seeing the benefits of improving their body image and appearance, which opens up new opportunities for salons looking to expand their service menu this year.

PRO TIP: Original & Mineral and Oway are releasing their male-focused product lines this year – stay tuned!

Mobile Payments & Online Booking

apple-pay

With millennials becoming a growing customer demographic, they will be looking for salons and stylists that will allow them to book and pay for services with their phones.

NFC or near-field communication allows two devices to exchange information through an NFC chip. Apple and Google have recently launched NFC-powered Apple Pay and Google Pay which allows mobile phone owners to pay for goods and services without swiping their credit cards. In light of the massive credit card breaches that occurred last year, NFC is a step in the right direction.

PRO TIP: Integrating NFC technology in your business transactions will help you gain more clients and keep your salon ahead of the curve. Additionally, setting up an online booking system will not be only convenient for clients but for you as well. Instead of spending time on the phone booking customers, you can have more time to relax or do other tasks.

Which of these salon business trends will you be implementing this year? Sound off in the comments below!

6 Signs You Need a Scalp Detox Treatment

$

0

When was the last time you had your scalp detoxed? And no, we’re not talking about the last time you washed your hair.

Like our body, our scalp absorbs everything we apply to it. And over time, they build up and wreak havoc on the scalp’s delicate ecosystem. For this reason, you need a detox treatment to completely get rid of all the harmful toxins and restore the balance.

Not sure if you need it? Check out the following signs that you’re due for a much-needed scalp detox treatment:

You only wash your hair a few times a week (if at all).

organic-scalp-treatment

Let’s face it, in the era of dry shampoo addictions and co-washing, most of us have abandoned the idea of shampooing our hair daily. While the short-term effects can be great for hair health, your scalp may not fare as well.

Most shampoos have a unique pH and formula to properly cleanse the scalp of excess sebum, residue and product buildup. When you continually skip this step, hair follicles can become clogged – leading to hair loss, thinning and weak hair strands.

We’re not saying start washing your hair daily – because that has adverse effects, too  – we’re saying it’s time to start working a scalp detox treatment into your beauty routine.

You’ve started a new lifestyle or diet.

It’s the new year, and you’ve probably started to make some positive changes to your diet and lifestyle (you go, Glen Coco). However, did you know when starting the detoxing process, toxins are expelled through your pores, including the large pores on your scalp? This can lead to breakouts, which can be quite painful and bothersome.

Organic scalp treatments, particularly those infused with the herb Horsetail, help soothe the inflammation and speed up the detox process by pulling out all the toxins and impurities left on the skin.

You’ve started to notice hair loss and thinning.

If you’re not suffering from alopecia areata, chances are your hair loss problem is caused by oxidative stress. While there can be various reasons why your hair is shedding more than normal, oftentimes it’s mainly because of the presence of excess free radicals and low number of antioxidants in your body. This imbalance causes oxidative stress, which destroys cells in the body such as hair follicles.

To treat oxidative stress, we highly recommend reducing your exposure to free radicals. Yes, there may be too many free radicals in the environment that it’s impossible to completely avoid them but there are several precautionary measures you can do to prevent oxidative stress. For one, a scalp detox effectively flushes out the harmful toxins before they attack the hair bulb and refreshes it with antioxidants to keep it protected.

There’s a season change.

Yes, it’s not just you. Seasonal changes, especially winter, can cause flakes to appear. When not exfoliated, it can build up on the scalp and clog pores. Doing a deep cleansing and purifying treatment will not only buff away the flakes, but also restore moisture and balance to damaged scalp.

what-is-scalp-detox

You live in an area where there’s too much environmental toxins.

scalp-detox

Do you live in an area where there’s too much pollution? Toxic fumes and substances are never completely washed away by shampoo. Most of them are quickly absorbed by the scalp, causing free radical damage to the skin cells and hair follicles.

Adding a scalp detox treatment to your beauty regimen can help draw out all the toxins that your daily shampoo cannot remove.

You’re heavy handed with hard-to-remove styling products.

Ever felt your hair grimy and waxy despite how many times you wash it? While styling products do serve a purpose, product residues that remain on the scalp and hair can cause dehydration and irritation when not removed properly. Unfortunately, your daily hair bath and conditioner can only do so much. In fact, they may actually exacerbate the problem if not washed away completely.

oway-herbs-and-clay

What you need is a complete scalp detox treatment to get rid of the residues once and for all. Trust us when we say you’d wish you had done it sooner once you see and feel the difference. Just check out the scalp detox benefits below:

Scalp Detox Benefits

  • Promotes healthy hair growth
  • Purifies the scalp of odor-causing bacteria
  • Antioxidants prevent oxidative stress and enhance scalp function

6 Essential Summer Hair Care Tips

$

Extreme heat and humidity are the hair’s top enemy.

Whether you’re going on a weekend getaway or a cross-country trip this summer, it’s important to keep your hair healthy and protected. Because you’ll never know who and what you’ll run into while on holiday.

We rounded up the six summer hair care tips every outdoor lover needs to know.

Summer Hair Care Tip #1: Use Products with UV Protection

Use summer hair care products with natural UV protection.

If there’s anything worse than using products with unnecessary chemicals, it’s using them in tandem with the summer sun. The summer heat tends to leave the pores of the skin and scalp open, allowing for further absorption of ingredients in hair products – so make sure your hair and body are absorbing the good stuff!

Biodynamic Green Anise is an all-natural UV protectant that’s great for preventing color fading and dryness. The Green Anise also acts as a filter, which help eliminate cancer-causing free radicals.

oway-sunway

We suggest changing to a shampoo and conditioner with added UV protection from Biodynamic Green Anise, as well as spraying a Sun Protective Elixir that you can take with you on the go.

In addition to using sun protection products, there are other summer hair care tips that you can practice without products (read on).

Summer Hair Care Tip #2: Wear a hat or hair scarf

summer-hair-care-tips

Another great summer hair care tip is to opt for a hat, hair scarf, or both. Not only do hats and head scarves provide further UV protection, they also help the hair retain moisture – a big-time summer hair care issue.

Healthy hair starts at the scalp.

Wearing a hat or head scarf also provides the scalp with further UV protection that may be hard to obtain just through summer hair care products. Since the scalp regulates sebum (your hair’s natural oils), it is very important to ensure your scalp is adequately protected.

A damaged scalp can leave hair inadequately nourished for months to come!

Hair scarves also act as damage control for the hair. They keep the hair in place during visits to the beach, where wind from the sea can result in terrible tangles (that you’ll no doubt vigorously brush out on the way to your next summer activity, resulting in further damage and breakage).

Let’s not neglect to mention there are various ways to wear hair scarfs and hats, so you should never run out of ways to protect the hair and scalp, all while rockin’ a fabulous summer style.

Summer Hair Care Tip #3: Wear hair in braids and gentle up-dos

The summer heat and humidity calls for gentle up-dos and stylish braids. We know everyone is loving the top-knot bun style and sock buns, but putting hair up high and tight can cause incredible damage during the summer months, when hair tends to get frizzy and dry.

Try out a Half Crown Braid – they are one of the hottest summer hair trends!

summer-hair-styles

Messy braids and gentle up-dos will keep the hair from further UV exposure and add another layer of protection for the scalp. Don’t worry about them being perfect – the laid back nature of these summer hairstyles will embrace the natural elements of summer and look fabulous!

Summer Hair Care Tip #4: Wash hair right after exposure

oway-sebum-balance-hair-bath

Whether it be after a nice dip in the pool or a long day at the beach, it’s a good idea to wash your hair right after exposure. This will eliminate further UV damage, and wash away any impurities that could stay on the hair. However, when we say wash the hair, we don’t necessarily mean use shampoo.

It’s more than acceptable to cut back on shampooing your hair on a daily basis when the warm weather comes your way. In fact, we recommend it!

Cutting back on shampoo will actually allow your scalp’s oil production to re-balance itself, which is extra important for moisture during summertime weather.

After a trip to the beach, try rinsing the hair in the shower first, followed by giving yourself a scalp message. A nice 30-second scalp massage will exfoliate old cells, increase scalp circulation to promote hair growth, and help remove any product build-up.

Then, try gently working your hair’s natural oils from the scalp down to the mid-shaft and ends. Medium to long hair lengths should also try just applying conditioner to the mid-shaft and ends.

If you do decide to shampoo your hair, Oway’s Sebum Balance Hair Bath is the perfect shampoo for keeping the scalp’s natural balance, thanks to the botanical blend of Biodynamic Sage, Organic Euphrasia Extract, and Ethical Teak + Mahogany Wood. It’s also available in travel size so you can take it whenever, wherever.

Summer Hair Care Tip #5: Eliminate Mean Green Pool Hair

Everyday exposure to chlorinated swimming pools can be very damaging to your hair. Although it can happen to anyone, men and women with shades of natural or colored blonde are prone to chlorine damage and discoloration.

Here’s our little secret summer hair care tip: Add moisture to your hair prior to jumping in the pool!

Think of your hair like a sponge, ready to soak up any water in its path.

If you put a dry sponge into the pool, it’ll absorb more of the chemicals than a wet sponge, that has already been saturated in water.

organic-purple-shampoo

With that being said, wet the hair and/or put in a leave-in conditioner prior to going to the pool. If you do not have a leave-in conditioner, you can use a regular conditioner, as well.

If you’re a frequent swimmer or have very blonde hair, we suggest going even further with your summer hair care.

Invest in a non-toxic purple shampoo. Try purple shampoos from Oway Silver Steel Hair Bath and Original & Mineral Conquer Blonde, these are professional-grade products that will cleanse the hair of impurities and eliminate brassy tones.

Summer Hair Care Tip #6: Deep Conditioning Treatments

OM-Seven-Day-Miracle

Summer hair ailments like dryness and split-ends can be helped with the inclusion of deep conditioning treatments in your summer hair regimen.

Before establishing your hair regimen and choosing the “best” summer hair care products, you must first determine your hair type and texture.

To choose a hair product without knowing your hair type is like buying a pair of shoes without knowing your shoe size – it can be very damaging.

To help determine your hair texture and what it lacks in the summer, ask your hair stylist to do conduct a Wet Stretch Test. This test will allow them to make the proper summer hair care recommendations for your hair type.

Making the right hair care choices can enhance your beauty inside and out. These summer hair care tips will allow you to feel and look confident through the harsh summer months with healthy, shiny hair.

6 Ideas to Beat Your Salon’s Summer Slowdown

$

They don’t call it the summer blues for nothing.

More no shows, less appointments. This time of year can be frustrating at salons. However, with the right promotions and plans in place, you could make this season your most productive, yet!

Here are 6 Ideas to Beat the Salon Summer Slowdown!

1.   Change your service menu by adding summer solutions.

Just like a restaurant changes their menu according to season, salons should, too.

Think about the beauty woes of summer and how you – the professional – can offer a solution to unruly frizz and increased dryness and damage caused by over exposure to environmental aggressors, such as UV rays, heat, pool minerals, etc.

Take a look at some of the most common summer hair stresses below (plus, some holistic-minded remedies)!

Problem: Frizz & Dryness

Solution: Non-Toxic Keratin Smoothing Treatment

2.   Attend a class.

Summer marks the calm before the holiday storm — now’s the time to attend classes and brush up on any skills before the busiest time of year.

Pro Tip: If traveling for education, take a few extra days to explore the area and use the entire trip as a tax write-off! Check out some upcoming Education classes we have going on around the country below:

3.   Improve your business skills.

We’re over half way through 2018, are you meeting all of the salon business goals you set for yourself? If not, that’s okay – summer is a great time to re-visti some of your goals.

Take this extra time to do a full audit of your salon’s operations. Is your salon website up to date? Are you keeping up with your social media? How long has it been since you’ve raised your prices?

We have tons of free salon business education waiting for you!

how-to-beat-summer-slump

4.   Follow up early.

With many clients going on holiday this season, many of them would forget to show up for an appointment. The best way to prevent no-shows and habitual tardiness is to remind them days in advance.

A cancellation window is great, but anything can happen in 48 or 24 hours. Send them text alerts one to two weeks early and the day before to allow you and your client to make appropriate changes to the schedule, or let you know they can’t make it. For a more personal touch, ask your receptionist to follow up on appointments days ahead by phone to get a verbal confirmation from the client. This way, you would also know straightaway if the client is planning to cancel or not.

Pro Tip: Having a cancellation fee in place is an effective way to reduce no-shows. Emphasize this detail during your conversation and watch them think twice about not showing up 😊

5.   Join or organize a Green Event.

What better way to beat the summer slump than dedicating your time to a good cause? Organize green events like the newest fitness craze “plogging” with your fellow holistic hair stylists and salons within your local community. Plogging is an environmental workout event that began in Sweden wherein people would go out for a run with a trash bag and plastic gloves, picking up litter along the way.

Doing this event will not only help you and your colleagues stay fit, but it will also help reduce garbage in your area. Plus, you and your salon might also get extra brownie points for being an eco-friendly business. It’s win-win situation for you, your business and the planet.

6.   Run a FREE Summer Haircut Contest.

Are your social media pages facing a slump in engagement as well? Doing an online campaign will not only increase your social media engagement but will also help increase awareness of your brand and business.

Giveaways and contests like FREE haircuts or treatments as prizes always draw a crowd. For example, you can ask your audience to like and share the contest on Facebook or Instagram, and choose a winner at the end of the promo period.

Everyone loves getting a new look during the summer, so you’ll never know how many of your contest participants will become a lifelong client. 🙂
